Tips to help you get more from LinkedIn groups...

A couple of tips in this to help you make more from LinkedIn groups. The theory is fine, but the user experience of LinkedIn groups is quite different. Since they changed the look, feel and layout, engagement in groups has fallen off a cliff. However, I have two groups on LinkedIn - one with around 7,000 members and the other with 24,000 and I continue to invest time in them because it will pay dividends in the long run because of the Community aspect. Good news though, LinkedIn has announced that they will soon be upgrading groups, and one of the key ways they'll be doing that is by posting group content into the home page news feed. Helping teenagers to use LinkedIn to transition from 'fun social networking' to 'professional networking'...

When and how to use Hashtags on LinkedIn...

Hashtags were reintroduced by LinkedIn a little while ago; now it seems they are testing their value on the platform by 'forcing' some people to use them. Hashtags can help people to find you when they are using the LinkedIn search tool, and it is usually a good idea to include a few relevant hashtags in your status updates – particularly if those hashtags are also amongst your top keywords. You can also search for specific hashtags, which will bring up all content that includes that hashtag. So, for example, if I was interested in cycling, I could search for #cycling and then engage with all relevant content where I can add something of value/interest. This again draws attention to yourself without selling and helps to send people to your profile page. Click...

Why Your LinkedIn Profile Photo Matters...

It's amazing how many people put little or no effort at all into their LinkedIn profile picture; yet it's critically important in getting attention and setting the scene before people start to read your beautifully crafted biography and career history. Not surprisingly, when people are looking for a photo for their LinkedIn profile they try to find something which makes them look confident and competent - yet that's not one of the first things we want to know about someone when seeing them for the first time. On many occasions at workshops, I've asked delegates to tell me what they want to see in a person purely from looking at their profile photo, and all too often they've talked about friendliness, trustworthiness, honesty and dependability before anything else. This Forbes article makes for interesting reading and really helps to highlight the importance of getting your photo right.
